Helpful Hints for Your Baby Skin Care Routine

by Maria Andersen

There is more to baby skin care than meets the eye. Keeping your baby's skin clean and clear means taking care of his or her whole body. Newborn babies are very susceptible to skin conditions because it takes time for the skin to get used to life outside of the womb. Proper baby skin care involves making smart decisions all day long. Everything from the soap you use in the bath to the clothes you put him into will affect the condition of your baby's skin. Don't worry too much though because practicing good skin care for your baby does not have to be difficult or complex. With just a little bit of common sense it can be really simple. If you need some help figuring out just how to care for your baby's skin, keep reading!

Whether or not you are ready to believe it, newborns don't need to be bathed every night. For the most part newborns and very young infants stay pretty clean. They stay so clean because they cannot move around on their own. This makes it easier for Mom and Dad to make sure that baby's skin doesn't come into contact with dirt or other things. While your baby is still considered a "newborn" he or she only needs to be given a bath twice a week or so (as long as you keep his or her face free of dirt). Once your son our daughter is mobile you will want to start bathing him (or her) more often.

Be careful not to use too much soap--you don't need very much at all to clean your baby's skin. All you need are a few drops of soap to totally clean your baby. Using more than those few drops will dry out the baby's skin and make him vulnerable to a host of skin irritations. Don't put the soap directly on to your baby's skin. Put the soap drops onto a washcloth and work up a lather; use the lather to clean your baby (make sure to rinse him quickly). You might find it easier, especially in the beginning months to lather and wash one part of the body at a time. A soapy baby can be scary to handle!

You don't need a lot of soap at bath time to keep your baby's skin clean. Don't use more than a few drops of soap. More than that could dry out your baby's skin and make it vulnerable to skin problems. Your baby's skin should not come into direct contact with the actual soap. Instead squeeze the soap onto a washcloth and then lather up your baby's body and rinse it off quickly. Don't try to lather up your baby's whole body too early--get used to the process by washing one part of your baby's body at a time. A slippery soapy baby can be scary to deal with!

Baby skin care takes many forms. Infant skin care does not have to be very difficult or complex. Your baby will have clean, clear and healthy skin as long as you take the time to shop carefully and use your common sense when anomalies pop up. Remember that you need to take care of all of your baby's skin not only the skin on her face and head. Caring for your baby's skin will depend on your making a lot of smart decisions all day long, but don't freak out! Before you know what has happened, keeping your daughter's skin clean and clear will feel like a habit. It won't take long for it to become second nature. It will be an automatic response!
